Where Sacred Business Cows Come to Die

I’m Jay Gill. I’ve spent 30 years watching businesses succeed and fail – including my own. I’ve been the executive director of a Hong Kong-listed company, structured IPOs for investment banks, and burned through $450,000 of investor money on a “can’t-fail” venture that failed spectacularly.

That expensive education taught me something crucial: Most business advice is bullshit sold by people who’ve never signed the front of a paycheck.

The Lies They Tell You

They say: “Focus on quality and customers will come.”
Reality: I had GMP certification, Halal compliance, and organic ingredients. Still went belly up! Quality without distribution is just expensive inventory.

They say: “Never compete on price.”
Reality: Sometimes being the cheapest bastard in the market is exactly the right strategy. Ask Ryanair.

They say: “Investors bring more than money – they bring expertise.”
Reality: My investors’ “expertise” turned my profitable direct-sales model into an MLM disaster. Their smart money cost us $450,000.

They say: “Follow your passion and money will follow.”
Reality: Passion doesn’t pay bills. Market demand does. I’m passionate about many things that would make terrible businesses.

I am Jasjit (Jay) Gill, the founder and solo provocateur behind Business Heretic. As Harry Truman’s sign said – “The Buck Stops Here”!

I have launched everything from natural skincare products to oil filtration systems, led international acquisitions, and advised countless businesses on legal and strategic matters. I have experienced both successes and instructive failures – and learned that the standard business playbook rarely tells the full story or the truth. And sometimes it will tell you straight out lies!

I’ve been everything the business world respects: Barrister-at-Law, investment banker, Executive Director of a Hong Kong-listed company. I’ve raised millions, structured IPOs, and managed international acquisitions. I’ve also been everything the business world pretends doesn’t exist: A spectacular failure who watched invested funds evaporate because I listened to investors over instinct and common sense. A founder who achieved GMP certification, Halal compliance and developed spectacular products then went bust anyway. An executive who discovered that prestigious titles mean nothing when payroll is due on Friday and you don’t have the cashflow.

After 30+ years across four countries – from corporate finance at an Investment Bank to running oil operations in Thailand, from Australian retail ventures to Malaysian manufacturing disasters – I’ve earned the right to call bullshit on conventional wisdom. 

My qualifications for heresy:

  • Lost enough money to know what doesn’t work.
  • Made enough money to know what actually does.
  • Legal training to know which rules are real.
  • Corporate experience to expose the lies big business tells (and sometimes small business too).
  • Entrepreneurial scars to prove theory is usually worthless.

I don’t write about business. I perform autopsies on business myths using real experience as my scalpel. 

Fair warning: I name names, share numbers, and tell the uncomfortable truths that make consultants nervous and MBAs angry. Because someone needs to tell you what actually works before you lose your own hard earned funds learning it yourself. 

When not dismantling sacred business cows, I’m probably reading another business book just to see what dangerous advice they’re peddling now.
